Adjacent to the famous Nanjing Zhongshan Scenic Area, Nanjing Vocational University of Industry Technology (NJUIT) is a century-old university with a long history and rich heritage. The predecessor of NJUIT is Chung Hua Vocational School founded in 1918 by Mr. Huang Yanpei, a famous modern democratic revolutionary, social activist and educator, which was the first “vocational” school in China. In 1952, Huang Yanpei served as the Vice Premier of the State Council and the first Minister of Light Industry, so he handed the School over to the Ministry of Light Industry. In 1954 the School was renamed Shanghai Mechanical School. In 1960, the whole School was moved to Nanjing and renamedNanjing Electrical and Mechanical School of the Ministry of Light Industry. In 1999, it was upgraded to a higher vocational institute named Nanjing Institute of Industry Technology.In 2019, it was upgraded to an undergraduate vocational college; and in June 2020, it was renamedNanjing Vocational University of Industry Technology with approval from the Ministry of Education.In the course of school-running for nearly a century, the University has been cultivating a group of outstanding alumni and a large number of practical technical talents, including Zhang Wentian, Hua Luogeng, Jiang Zhuyun, Xu Boxin, Zhu Senlin, Qin Yi, Gu Xinyi, Wang Shiji, Zou Shichang, etc.
Boasting ofsuch three campuses as Xianlin, Zhongshan and Tiantang, the University covers an area of over 1200 mu, with gross floor area of 400,000 square meters, 250 million yuan worth of teaching and scientific research equipment, and 1.18 million books. The University boasts of 6 undergraduate specialties and 48 specialties for professional training, with 12,824 full-time students and 154 international students. There are 920 faculty members, 786 full-time teachers, and 180 teachers with doctoral degrees, accounting for 23%; 322 teachers with senior professional titles, accounting for 40%; and the ratio of double-qualified teachers exceeds 90%.
The University attaches great importance to the construction of talents team and devotes greater effort to talent introduction. It has a national-level teaching team, a national university teacher team of Huang Danian type, and a national-level teaching innovation team of vocational education teachers respectively, 7 provincial excellent teaching teams, 3 provincial “Qinglan Project” technological innovation teams, and 3 excellent technological innovation teams of provincial universities; 1 national teaching master of “Ten Thousand Talents Program”, 4 national technical experts, 2 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of Colleges and Universities of Ministry of Education, 2 deputy directors and 11 members of the National Teaching Steering Committee of Industrial Vocational Education; 2 national “Huang Yanpei Outstanding Teacher Award” winners, 4 experts awarded with special allowances from the State Council, 2 young and middle-aged provincial experts with outstanding contributions, 4 provincial teaching masters, 1 provincial outstanding teacher, 1 teaching master in light industry vocational education, 2 teaching masters of the first session of vocational education in logistics industry; 99 candidates high-level talents for the provincial “333 Project”, candidates for “Qinglan Project”, candidates for “Six Talent Peaks”, entrepreneurship and innovation doctors, members of the first batch of Zijin Cultural Creative Talents, and outstanding young scholars in social sciences in Jiangsu.
Perfecting the talent training mode of “hierarchical classification, integration of study and practice, and fusion of entrepreneurship and innovation”, the University makes sustained efforts to promote education and teaching reform. It has built 4 national vocational education specialty teaching resource bank projects, 3 national higher vocational education training bases, 11 national excellent courses, excellent resource sharing courses and online open courses, and 32 national planned textbooks. It has won 3 national Teaching Achievement Awards, including 1 first prize; 3 first prizes in the National Vocational Colleges Teaching Skills Competition and Information-based Teaching Competition; 29 first prizes in the National Vocational Students Skills Competition, 10 first prizes in the National Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, and 9 first prizes in the National Undergraduate Electronic Design Competition, 2 gold awards, 2 silver awards, and 8 bronze awards in China’s “Internet+” College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, which are the best results of national vocational colleges.
Adhering to the road of industry-education integration and university-enterprise cooperation, the University makes sustained efforts to improve its scientific research and social service capabilities. The University presides over 6 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 project funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China and 6provincial and ministerial projects under research. It has 1 planned project of the national “13th Five-Year Plan” Industry-education Integration Development Engineering, 1 Engineering Research Center of the Provincial Development and Reform Commission and 1 Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center for Colleges (Engineering Technology Center for Higher Vocational Colleges), 2 provincial deep industry-education integration training platforms, and 1 provincial-level university science park. It has established in-depth cooperative relations with 30 Fortune 500 companies, and established 15 cooperation platforms with leading companies such as Huawei, Siemens, ABB, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Rockwell, etc.
The University keeps in touch with more than 90 overseas organizations and colleges in more than 40 countries or regions, such as the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP). In cooperation with the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Steering Committee and the China Nonferrous Mining Group, it established the NJUIT Mechanical and Electrical Campus ofSino-Zambia Vocational College of Science and Technology in Zambia; the teaching standard of mechanical and electrical engineering was approved as the national vocational education teaching standard in Zambia, and was selected as an excellent case in the World Education Conference 2019.
Integrating multiple resources and actively building platforms, the University serves vocational education with distinctive advantages and contributes to vocational education with high-quality resources. It plays a leading role in 5 national platforms such as Research Institute of Huang Yanpei’s Thoughts on Vocational Education, National Vocational Colleges Alliance for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education, Vocational Education Branch of China Education Association for International Exchange, Higher Vocational Research Association of China Light Industry Council, National Modern Electromechanical Technology Vocational Education Group of Machinery Industry, and in 9 provincial platforms such as Jiangsu Light Industry Association and Jiangsu Electromechanical Vocational Education Group.
The University is the only state-run undergraduate-level vocational education pilot university in the country, the only Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Demonstration Base of the State Council of vocational colleges in the country, among the first batch of pilot universities for the diagnosis and improvement of internal quality assurance systems in the country, and among the first batch of pilot universities for vocational education colleges “going global”. The University is selected as one of top 50 national colleges for typical employment experience and typical innovation and entrepreneurship experience, and one of the top 50 national vocational colleges for teaching management.The University has consecutively ranked first in Jiangsu and second in the country in terms of competitiveness of higher vocational colleges in China.
At the outset of a new century and embarking on a new journey, the University will thoroughly implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, implement the spirit of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the CPC and the strategic plan proposed by the third Party Congress. The University strives to continue to play a leading and demonstrative role by comprehensively promoting vocational undergraduate education reform, and strives to become a model for the training of high-level technical and skilled talents, a model for “all-roundcultivation through the whole length by all staff” of vocational education, a model for “reform of teachers, textbooks and teaching methods” of vocational colleges, a modelforthe construction of “double-qualified” teaching staff and a model for industry-education integration, to achieve the vision of “building a world-class vocational college and becoming the cradle of craftsmen of the nation”.
